Your questions answered

Loft Insulation FAQs

The questions we're asked most often about loft insulation, boarding and removal. Can't find what you need? Get in touch and we'll happily help.

How much does loft insulation cost?

Costs depend on the size of your loft, the product you choose and whether old insulation needs removing first. Because every loft is different, we give a fixed price after a free survey rather than a vague figure — so you know exactly what you'll pay before any work begins.

How much could loft insulation save me on heating?

A large share of heat escapes through an uninsulated roof, so upgrading your loft insulation typically delivers one of the fastest paybacks of any energy-saving home improvement. Savings vary with your home, current insulation and how you heat it, but most customers notice a warmer home and a boiler that runs less.

What depth of loft insulation do I need?

Current guidance recommends around 270mm of mineral wool for a typical loft. Many older homes have far less, so topping up to the recommended depth is one of the simplest ways to cut heat loss.

Should I choose SuperFOIL or Knauf mineral wool?

It depends on your loft. SuperFOIL multifoil is slim and reflective, ideal for tight headroom or insulating at the roof slope. Knauf mineral wool is a proven, cost-effective choice for insulating the loft floor. Often the best result combines both — we'll advise during your free survey.

Will loft insulation cause condensation or damp?

Not when it's installed correctly. The key is keeping eaves ventilation clear so the roof can still breathe. Our team always preserves airflow and treats downlighters and pipework properly, which prevents the trapped moisture that leads to condensation.

Can I store things in my loft after it's insulated?

Yes — but only with raised loft boarding. Boarding straight onto the joists crushes the insulation and creates cold spots. We fit boarding on loft legs so the full insulation depth is preserved underneath while you get a safe, usable storage floor.

Do I need to remove my old insulation first?

Not always. If your existing insulation is sound, we can often top it up. But if it's damp, contaminated by vermin or badly degraded, removing it first gives a much better and healthier result. Our free survey will tell you which applies to your loft.

Is fibreglass insulation safe?

Modern mineral wool is non-combustible and, once laid in the loft with the hatch closed, poses no day-to-day issue. Removing old fibreglass is best left to professionals, though, as disturbing it releases irritant dust — which is why we use proper protection and dust control.

How long does the work take?

Most domestic loft jobs are completed in a single day, though larger lofts, combined removal-and-renewal projects or complex roofs may take longer. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your fixed quote.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes. Every project starts with a free, no-obligation survey and a clear fixed price. There's no pressure and no hard sell — just honest advice on what your loft needs.
