Knauf mineral-wool loft insulation

Knauf Loft Insulation

Knauf Insulation is one of the most trusted names in British home insulation, and Knauf Loft Roll 44 is the go-to mineral-wool product for insulating loft floors up and down the country. If you want a proven, cost-effective and well-understood way to keep heat in your home, this is it.

At Insulate Now we install Knauf loft roll every week, topping up thin existing insulation and laying full depth in lofts that have little or none. Mineral wool remains the workhorse of loft insulation for good reasons — it is affordable, non-combustible, excellent at trapping heat, and made partly from recycled glass with Knauf's bio-based ECOSE binder, which means it's softer to handle and lower in odour than older products.

Here's everything you need to know about Knauf loft insulation and how our team fits it to current recommended standards.

Why Knauf Loft Roll 44?

Knauf Loft Roll 44 is a glass mineral-wool quilt with a thermal conductivity of 0.044 W/mK — the '44' in the name. It comes in generous rolls that are simple to lay between and across ceiling joists, building up the depth needed to meet today's insulation recommendations of around 270mm for a typical loft.

It is non-combustible, giving valuable peace of mind, and it carries Knauf's ECOSE Technology — a bio-based binder that makes the wool softer, less itchy and lower in dust than traditional mineral wool. For homeowners that means a cleaner job; for the planet it means a product with strong environmental credentials.

Topping Up vs Full Installation

Many homes already have some loft insulation, but it was laid years ago to a much shallower depth than is now recommended. If yours is flattened, patchy or simply too thin, topping it up with a fresh layer of Knauf laid across the joists can make a real difference to warmth and bills.

Where there's no usable insulation at all — or where old material is contaminated and we've removed it — we lay a full, even depth from scratch, working carefully around wiring, downlighters and the loft hatch. Either way, the goal is continuous, gap-free coverage, because cold spots and bare patches are where heat escapes.

Done to the Right Standard

Insulation only performs if it's installed properly. We make sure recommended depths are achieved, that insulation isn't crammed into eaves where it blocks vital roof ventilation, and that recessed lights are treated safely with the correct clearances. We also lag cold-water pipes and tanks in the loft so they don't freeze once the warm air below is sealed off.

Get those details wrong and you risk condensation, damp or a fire-safety hazard. Get them right — as we do on every job — and you get a warmer home, lower bills and a healthy, well-ventilated roof space.

Affordable Warmth That Pays You Back

Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make. Because warm air rises and escapes through the roof, adding or upgrading mineral wool typically delivers one of the fastest paybacks of any energy-saving measure — quietly trimming your heating bills every winter for decades.

Combine Knauf loft roll with raised loft boarding and you keep both: full insulation depth and usable storage. Ask us about a combined package during your free survey.

Questions

Knauf Loft Insulation FAQs

How thick should my loft insulation be?

Current guidance recommends around 270mm of mineral wool for a typical loft. Older homes are often insulated to far less than this, so topping up to the recommended depth with Knauf Loft Roll is one of the simplest ways to cut heat loss.

Is Knauf insulation safe and non-combustible?

Yes. Knauf Loft Roll 44 is non-combustible glass mineral wool. We also install it correctly around downlighters and keep eaves ventilation clear, so your loft stays both warm and safe.

Is mineral wool itchy and messy to live with?

Modern Knauf wool with ECOSE Technology is far softer and lower in dust than older products. Once it's laid in the loft and the hatch is closed, you won't notice it day to day — and our team cleans up thoroughly before leaving.

Can you remove my old insulation first?

Yes. If your existing insulation is damp, contaminated or simply past its best, we offer a full removal and disposal service before laying fresh Knauf loft roll. See our fibreglass removal page for details.

Will new loft insulation cause condensation?

Not when it's fitted properly. We make sure eaves ventilation isn't blocked and that the roof can still breathe, which prevents the trapped moisture that leads to condensation and damp.
